Tree Trails and Wildflowers

Clifton Observatory and Promenade Family Tree Trail – We, with Avon Gorge and Downs Wildlife (AGDW), developed a Family Tree Trail around the Clifton Observatory and Promenade. The trees have tree tags with QR codes that go to our respective websites for Key Facts and Fun Tasks for each tree.

St Andrew’s Churchyard (Birdcage Walk) Tree Trail – The Friends of Birdcage Walk have for a number of years had a Tree Trail documented on their web-site and celebrated, labelled up on special occasions. As one of our favourite, regular walks with Buddy we have placed this Tree Trail on our website in our style and are arranging for tree tags with the names of the trees and QR codes to our respective web-sites to make this Tree Trail more accessible and informative for the benefit of visitors to our special place. Buddy has also been adopted as the Friends’ Gardeners 🙂

Victoria Park Tree Trail – Andrea and Matt, two of Sarah’s special friends who developed the Interactive App for the Observatory Tree Trail live near Victoria Park, visit their regularly and had done so with Sarah. They asked if we could develop a Tree Trail for Victoria Park. Of course we have and are in the process of engaging with the Victoria Park Action Group (VPAG) to get their support for establishing the Tree Trail as part of their resources and activities and placing joint tree tags on those trees.

Sarah’s Brandon Hill Memorial Tree – In 2021, we sponsored a tree under the Bristol City Council’s TreeBristol scheme on Brandon Hill – just along from Charlotte Street where Sarah lived for a year while at University, where she would sometimes sit with friends for a cider and where she and we would commonly walk Buddy especially when we went to meet her from work.

Sarah’s Observatory Memorial Tree – We also sponsored a TreeBristol tree on the approach to the Observatory just where Sarah and Buddy commonly walked and we continue to walk with Buddy every couple of days. It took a little while with a bit of a disappointment over ‘ownership’ of our first location and tree, and then the tree for our 2nd location had difficulties but, hopefully, the Hornbeam planted in December 2025 will thrive.

Sarah’s Clifton Hill Green Tree – This year we have sponsored another tree, requesting if we could somewhere on the small green triangle just around from the top of Goldney Avenue – Buddy’s first ‘pooh stop’ for many walks. The BCC have approved that and will be planting a tree close to the centre, near the bench, late 2026.

Wildlife Trust Wildflower Chart – On seeing a lovely Wildflower Chart banner on the side of the brick shed at Avon Wildlife Trust’s Grow Wilder site, we asked if they had the design and if we could help make it more available to lovers of wildflowers.  Took Shaun a while to track down the design files and then for us together to tidy up the design and to replace the non-natives with natives but we did it and then printed wall charts and banners for Grow Wilder to use in their exhibits, show stalls and plantings. We have then got the design printed as a chopping board. These are now available to purchase by going to Grow Wilder or by emailing us – paul.booley@sarahswildlifeprojects.org
